Recently, on Tuesday, February 5, Southside Elementary School third, fourth, and fifth grade students participated in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The students were given words to spell from materials prepared by the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. Students displayed knowledge learned throughout their school experience while competing for top honors. Josiah Saunders, a fifth grader, claimed first place and Easton Dillard, a third grader, was the second place winner. The following students also earned their way into the final round of the school spelling bee: Valerie Richardson, Sydney Moss, Kalin Cobbs, Harper Holifield, Ashton Flick, Carter Fanin, Nadia Swanson, Kinslee Cassell, Terriona McClark, and Christopher Witt. Josiah and Easton will participate in the Danville Area Spelling Bee, which will be held at Averett University on Saturday, March 16, 2019.
